DIY Chalk Paint

This month's activity came straight from Instagram (you know the kind... where everything looks absolutely perfect and magical). They created the most beautiful flower mural using homemade chalk paint.

Did mine look like that? Absolutely not.

Instead, we ended up with bright, colorful blobs all over the driveway (and hands and legs and feet) and honestly, it was perfect.

Here's how we made it:

• Gather up those leftover sidewalk chalk bits.

• Put them in a zip-top plastic bag and carefully crush them into a powder with a hammer (we used a meat hammer ).

• Pour the chalk dust into a muffin tin, add a little water, stir, and paint away!

The best part wasn't the finished "art." It was that my kids (ages 3 & 5) played together for 45 uninterrupted minutes with almost no direction from me. They experimented, mixed colors, talked about what they were creating, and simply enjoyed being outside together.

That's the real win.

Sometimes the activities that don't turn out Pinterest-perfect end up creating the best memories, and the richest opportunities for language, imagination, and connection.
